Context

As the Media Arts & Sciences Fellow, a large part of my role is supporting faculty with teaching demonstrations of software and equipment for the arts/computer science departments. For the course CS220: Human-Computer Interaction, Figma is one of the largest demonstrations I provide. Over the span of two course sessions, I lead a follow-along demonsration featuring Figma design basics specific to mobile application prototyping.

In-Class Tutorials

For three course sections, I go through Figma basics and highlight user-centered design. I provide a Figma template for students to register an education account, and we build together in-class.

Low-fidelity prototyping

In Figma, I work with students to follow along a frame creation. We focus on adding images, text, and icons of a sample “Spotify” page that a user might see on their phone screen.

Components, Variants & Scrolling Features

Aside from image and text basics, we practice building components and variants with different features. As I run through the instructions, I ask students to follow along and let me know if they have questions or need clarifications!

Conclusion

As the Teaching Fellow for the Media Arts & Sciences Program, providing in-class demonstrations is a large part of my role. Figma follow-alongs are vital for students taking Human-Computer Interaction, and I provide numerous resources for clear design and user-centered prototyping.
